I recently attended a conservative school board candidate event in Saint Charles County, MO organized by a conservative talk radio program and branded the, "Save Our Schools Rally." State Senator Bill Eigel was their headliner. When he spoke, the crowd cheered over and over, applauding all his anti-teaching establishment, faux moral outrage talking points—that is, until he got to school vouchers.
Maybe because he thought he was in a safe space, Bill dropped the usual euphemisms around "school choice." He said the quiet part out loud: "We've been working very hard in Jeff city on vouchers," he told the crowd. The cheering subsided. Of course, some were still all-in, but I heard audible groans from others. This, I thought. This is their wedge issue. Got it.
I'd love to chat with you about this! I've been in touch with Lynn Holley about your group. If you're interested in talking to me, have her connect us. And thanks for all you're doing!
