So sick of people saying these kids just want to get out of school. I’m not saying this isn’t the motivation for some, but in my twenty-eight years of teaching, I taught so many kids who were thoughtful and put their energy behind causes like this.
People who like to bitch about failing public schools complain that schools don’t teach civics anymore. Well, the protest marches seem like civics in action to me.
I remember watching the civil rights demonstrators knocked down by firehoses on television. I remember, clearly, the assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK. I put my head down on my desk and wept when Nixon's win of 1968 was announced over the high school's PA. The Kent State murders came as I was applying to college.
This is who is out on the frontlines demonstrating with today's students and cheering them on. We've never forgotten how it feels when your own government wants you to fear it. An illegitimate administration? Yeah, we know about that.
